Kids love using their hands to explore the world they live in. We love giving them the chance to explore a number of concepts using colored rice. Follow these easy steps to create colored rice for your class.
You will need food coloring, rice, vinegar, measuring tools, and either Ziploc bags or plastic container(s).
First measure the rice and place it inside a Ziploc or a plastic container. I used one cup of rice. I also used recycled containers from our favorite Chinese restaurant.
Add the color you want and 1/2 tsp. of vinegar to each cup of rice. I have found that the more color you add, the stronger the color.
Shake, Shake, SHAKE!
My kids helped shake and mix the colors.
I added more rice while we were shaking.
Lay out to dry. I placed paper towels on my cookie sheets and spread the rice on top.
I would wait a day or two to let the rice dry completely. I have never experienced it but I have heard of rice getting moldy if closed up, too soon.
Here is the end result all mixed together.
My son could not wait to put his hands in the rice!
We hope you enjoy making colored rice for your classroom!
